Some children who visit our practice are given nitrous oxide/oxygen, or what you may know as laughing gas for dental procedures. We provide nitrous oxide in Statesville, NC, to help children relax before they receive treatment.

What Is Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen?

Nitrous oxide/oxygen is a type of sedation that blends two gases: oxygen and nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide/oxygen is given through a small breathing mask which is placed over the child’s nose. This service allows children to relax, without putting them to sleep the way general anesthesia would.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes nitrous oxide sedation as a safe, effective sedation method for treating children’s dental needs.

The gas is mild, easily taken, and non-addictive. With normal breathing, gas is quickly eliminated from the body. While inhaling nitrous oxide/oxygen, your child remains fully conscious and will keep all natural reflexes.

Prior to Your Appointment

Please inform our office of any change to your child’s health. We must also be alerted to any existing medical conditions.

Let us know about any respiratory conditions that might make breathing through the nose difficult for your child, as it may limit the effectiveness of laughing gas/nitrous oxide.

Let us know if your child is taking any medications on the day of your appointment to prevent any issues with negative interactions.

Do not hesitate to reach out to our office if you have any questions or concerns about nitrous oxide/oxygen use and your child.
